Christian Wycital is a student from Jade University, Oldenburg, Germany, in the course of Applied Geodesy. In summer 2015 he has participated as one of 10 students who have cooperated in a joined international student project between Jade University and KNUCA. During two week students have successfully completed complex task of geodetic network measurements, terrestrial laserscanning and photogrammetry creating 3D models of buildings and objects on KNUBA campus. After that project Christian Wycital has decided to work in Kiev for his bachelor thesis in winter semester 2015/16.
During his stay in Kiev he had the task to compare the quality and potential of photogrammetry vs. totalstation measurements. As test object, a historical building at Pecherska was selected. Due to the limited access to that building he had to solve several practical problems in field measurement. Finally he could create a façade model using the iWitness software. Reference data from totalstations were not recorded by himself but delivered through the company Metrobud. Consequently, the quality and completeness of this data could not be influenced. Other data, e.g. from terrestrial laserscanning, were not available.
In his bachelor thesis he explained the basics of photogrammetry and the outline of his project. The thesis fulfils basic scientific quality requirements, e.g. by using literature. However, he did not evaluate his results in much detail or depth as it would be expected. The thesis was written in good English. The final oral presentation in Oldenburg was also given in English which is not usual for the German students. All in all, Christian Wycital completed a work with good results. It was marked with 2.1 (German grades are between 1 and 4, 1 is best). The bachelor thesis was evaluated by co-reviewer Prof. Roman Schultz.
